David Bentley
David is a noted jazz/blues pianist and songwriter. His group is in demand wherever jazz is heard and he is globally recognised as the author of Python Lee Jackson's still-smouldering 70s hit, In
A Broken Dream.
In A Broken Dream rose to number three in the British charts and later turned up on the sound track of films and documentaries (including the acclaimed art house movie Breaking The Waves).
It has also been the subject of literally scores of cover versions.
David's interests span a wide spectrum. His modern jazz trio backed jazz greats including Milt Jackson and Phil Woods during the heady days of The Cellar Club in Brisbane. His blues-oriented group held the residency at Brisbane's Port Office Hotel for eight years and pumped up the crowds at the East Coast Blues & Roots Festival several years running.
His 2006 album, Last Man Standing album received wide airplay on Radio National. He has since recorded two new albums – DB3: The Leopard Lodge Sessions and a new album of original songs titled, simply, Bentley.
David has also pursued a parallel career in journalism and In 1995 was awarded the Gold Walkley, Australia’s highest journalistic accolade. With illustrator Greville Patterson, he recently co-authored Jambo! Jambo! - an illustrated book for young readers.
The other members of his regular trio lineup are acoustic bassist Andrew Shaw, well-known in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast, and Kerry Jacobson, a versatile percussionist acclaimed as
the drummer on Dragon's hit, April Sun In Cuba.
